    Description

3 OLD PROGRAMS INC 1906 ATLANTA GA GRAND OPERA HOUSE - TEMPERANCE COCA-COLA AD etc
THREE (3) ITEMS IN THIS LOT AS FOLLOWS:
1 -- An attractive sixteen page “THE GRAND [OPERA HOUSE] PROGRAM MUSIC AND THE DRAMA” Brochure (7.75 x 10.75”) from 1906. Issued by the famous DeGIVE GRAND OPERA HOUSE in Atlanta, Georgia where GONE WITH THE WIND had its world premiere in 1939. Orange covers, orange & white pages. Cover has a nice ART NOUVEAU DRAWING OF A FAIRY AND A WOMAN HOLDING A MASK.
This printed brochure is basically FILLED WITH ADVERTISEMENTS. Information related to the famous play THE MERCHANT OF VENICE seems almost buried among all the advertisements. The advertisements themselves are the most interesting aspect (along with the Art Nouveau Cover) of the PROGRAM. Many of the ads are ILLUSTRATED and they give an excellent feel for the diverse businesses in the City of Atlanta, GA and the surrounding area in 1906. The advertisements include:
COCA COLA, COLUMBIA GRAPHOPHONES, CANDY, AUTOMOBILES, LIVERY STABLES, BELL TELEPHONE, PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIOS, RAILROADS, LIQUOR, PIANOS, JEWELRY, HOTELS, RESTAURANTS, VIOLINS, MOVING PICTURES, VICTOR TALKING MACHINES AND RECORDS, CIGARS, and MUCH more!
The program was once GLUED INTO AN ALBUM OR SCRAPBOOK so there are old glued paper stains and some tears on the reverse (see scan below). Also, ink writing on the front cover concerning attendance at the play on 18 December. Finally, there are some wrinkled pages along the right side of the magazine. Otherwise the item is in good condition. Scan shows front & back covers, and a few inside pages.
ATLANTA GEORGIA'S DeGIVE GRAND OPERA HOUSE – In 1893, Laurent DeGive built the DeGive Grand Opera House located at 157 Peachtree Street at Pryor Street. The opulent theater was noted for the incandescent lighting on stage, a new feature for Atlanta, and seated 2,044 people. In 1916, The Loews Corporation leased the DeGive Grand Opera House and converted it into a movie theater. The theater was shuttered in 1978, and soon thereafter damaged by fire and demolished.
2 -- The second item in this auction lot is a 1907 Souvenir Program from the Atlanta Art Association's presentation of the comic opera CAPRICE of CAPRI, at the Grand Opera House.
This program is also filled with advertisements but not as many are illustrated. There is a nice ILLUSTRATED COCA-COLA AD however (see scan below). This brochure measures about 6 x 9.5" and has 16 pages in addition to its tan paper covers. There is a vertical fold-line in the middle of the pamphlet and the reverse also has some glue stains from once having been pasted into an album or scrapbook. There is a newspaper review of the play pasted along its left edge onto the front of this old program. Otherwise the brochure is in good condition. The scan below shows the front & back covers, the title page and an inside page with the COKE AD.
The illustrated Coca Cola ad has an interesting theme. Its headline is "MODERN BUSINESSMEN INSIST ON TEMPERANCE." The ad claims that Coke -- "Admirably fills the great American demand for a STRICTLY TEMPERANCE BEVERAGE . . . harmless as tea or coffee."
3 -- Finally, in this lot there is an 8-page program (about 6.5 x 9"), for Season 1908-1909 at the ACADEMY OF MUSIC. The pamphlet has a nice Pepsi-Cola advertising on the front and 2-3 other advertisements on the back and on each interior page. The program is intact but has a number of small tears and creases, especially at the weak spine and along the right edge. The scan below shows front and back of the Program with one interior page. That page has a large torn & "glued" area in the lower left corner.
Not sure exactly where this theater was located -- possibly in Raleigh, NC -- as that is the stated location of most of the advertisers. However there are also a few advertisers from Virginia (Richmond & Norfolk).
