William Steig (1907-2003) had a lengthy career as a cartoonist, artist, author and illustrator. He created the beloved children's works 'Sylvester and the Magic Pebble', Doctor De Soto and Shrek. His celebrated works have won numerous distinctions including the Caldecott (1970) and National Book Award (1983).
