Description:
No date. Ca. early 1960s.
Seven black and white photographs, approximately 10 x 8 inches each, text information tipped in on verso. The photos are toned around the margins; the photo of Professor Elliot is uniformly toned, otherwise good condition. Seven photographs issued by the British Information Services depicting the International Ionosphere Satellite S.51 and the scientists and politicians involved in the satellite project. Six of the seven photos have descriptive text attached on the verso of the photo, also recording a Release Date of April 1962. Of the seven photos, there are two images of the satellite itself. The text of one reads: Picture shows the S.51 satellite as it appears in orbit, with three of the four paddles covered with solar cells to provide the S.51 with electrical power...The text of the other reads: The S.51 satellite cut-away to show instrumentation... Four additional photos depict individuals involved in the S.51 Project. They are: Professor Sir Harrie Massey (Chairman of the British National Space Research Committee); H. Elliot (Professor of Physics, Imperial College London--the project's lead); and Dr. R.L.F. Boyd and Mr. M.O. Robins (both University College, London). The final photo (without text) is that of Conservative Party politician Selwyn Lloyd. The photos comprise an interesting collection of images relating to British Satellite research in the early 60s.
