Hayti, Missouri: Masonic Grand Lodge of Missouri and its Subordinate Lodges of the Sixth District, 1965. Octavo (8½" x 5½"); two-page pamphlet program. Minor tanning, original attendee's folds (perhaps to fit in a jacket pocket) now flattened.
This program, labeled "tentative" on the inside to allow for last-minute changes, was prepared for the celebration of Americanism Day in the Central School Gymnasium of Hayti, Missouri on 3 October 1965. The celebration was named after Prince Hall, the "First Negro Grand Master of African Lodge No 459." The host was "John B. Hughes, 32° M.W. Grand Master of the most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Missouri and Its Jurisdiction."
The second page has a four-paragraph "Historical Sketch of Prince Hall Masons." The third page is the order of events for the program proper. The fourth and final page lists sponsoring lodges, and Missouri Masonic leaders, and notes the location of the event at 3 p.m., which was preceded by a "Parade Downtown" at 2:15 p.m.
From the Historical Sketch: "Prince Hall was born in the British West Indies and migrated to Boston, Massachusetts at the age of seventeen, and through studying at night and following his trade as a leather maker by day, became a civic and spiritual leader and a minister noted for the intellectual quality and eloquence of his sermons. Prince Hall was the founder and first Grand Master of Freemasonry for Negroes in America.".
